Understanding Trauma & PTSD

Trauma can overshadow your sense of safety—draining your confidence, making once-routine tasks feel overwhelming, and leaving you with a constant sense of unease. I’m Madison Sikking, the founder of Madison Marie Counselling and a Certified Canadian Counsellor dedicated to providing a supportive environment where you can share your story without judgment. My approach is trauma-informed, drawing on evidence-based methods like EMDR, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), and CBT to help you work through what’s weighing you down at a pace that respects your comfort.

When you arrive at  my office on Macleod Trail SW, you’ll find a calm setting with thoughtful touches (like blankets, soft lighting, and gentle scents) so you can feel secure as you open up about painful memories. Whether you’ve experienced a single incident or multiple stressors over time, my goal is to walk beside you, offering guidance and empathy as you rebuild resilience and reintroduce a sense of hope into your day-to-day life.

Possible Signs of Trauma or PTSD

  • Frequent nightmares, flashbacks, or distressing thoughts
  • Avoiding people, places, or conversations linked to the event
  • Feeling on edge, jumpy, or irritable without a clear reason
  • Difficulty sleeping, concentrating, or managing everyday stress
  • Overwhelming guilt, shame, or a sense of detachment from loved ones

Trauma doesn’t always follow a predictable pattern—it can show up as unexplained anxiety, anger, or sudden shifts in mood. If these experiences resonate with you or someone you care about, taking that first step to reach out can be a crucial move toward relief and genuine healing.

Possible Signs of Trauma or PTSD

Not everyone processes distressing events the same way, but there are some telltale patterns that often signal unhealed trauma. If these experiences linger and start making daily life more difficult, reaching out for specialized support can bring genuine relief.

Here are a few common indicators to keep in mind:

Flashbacks or Nightmares

Replaying the painful event in your thoughts or dreams. Adults might avoid bedtime altogether, while children may express fear through restless sleep or detailed drawings.

Avoidance Behaviors

Steering clear of situations, topics, or people that spark memories of the trauma. A child might refuse to talk about what happened; a teenager or adult could avoid routines or locations linked to the event.

Feeling Constantly On Edge

Heightened alertness, jumpiness, and a sense that danger lurks around every corner (often called hypervigilance). Kids may become extra clingy or overreact to normal sounds; older individuals might experience tension headaches or struggle to relax.

Emotional Numbness or Withdrawal

Finding it hard to connect with loved ones or enjoy activities. In younger clients, this can appear as a sudden loss of interest in once-favorite games; in older clients, it may show up as fatigue, isolation, or going “through the motions” without feeling much.

Overwhelming Guilt or Shame

Blaming yourself for not handling the event differently or labeling your reactions as “weak.” These feelings can seep into everyday life, damaging self-esteem and creating a cycle of negative self-talk.

Sudden Mood Swings or Irritability

Becoming easily frustrated or lashing out over small things, sometimes without understanding why. Children might throw more frequent tantrums; teens and adults may notice abrupt shifts between anger and sadness.

"Bryan is super personable and dedicated to providing exceptional work. We needed a new power outlet to charge an electric car and he was able to get it done quickly and without hassle at a reasonable price. Highly recommend if u want to support local businesses."

"I recently contracted Bryan for electrical work during my small basement renovation and will gladly be using his services again for future projects. The previous owners had done electrical work which was not up to code and Bryan explained every problem he encountered while bringing the whole basement up to code. Not only am I pleased with the work he did but I feel safer knowing that all of the electrical in the basement now has ground wires. This was not in his original scope of work but I am grateful that he brought up any safety issues he found. I would highly recommend giving him a call for your electrical projects."
